Areal biases in stop paradigms

چکیده

The well-known hypothesis that stop paradigms tend to display gaps at the voiced velar and voiceless bilabial positions was tested. Data from UPSID suggest that this tendency represents a rough average across the world's languages, but that it misses some strong areal biases. For example, African languages do not avoid voiced velar stops, and they are responsible for most of the underrepresentation of the voiceless bilabial stops. Thus, it can not be concluded that velars and bilabials constitute universally underrepresented members of the respective voiced and voiceless stop series. Although this pattern is to be expected from proposed production and perception constraints, it is largely overridden by areal biases.

A Systematic Review of Experimental Paradigms for Exploring Biased Interpretation of Ambiguous Information with Emotional and Neutral Associations

Interpretation biases have been extensively explored in a range of populations, including patients with anxiety and depressive disorders where they have been argued to influence the onset and maintenance of such conditions. Other populations in which interpretation biases have been explored include patients with chronic pain, anorexia nervosa, and alcohol dependency among others, although this ...

Cognitive biases and addiction: an evolution in theory and method.

An evolution in theoretical models and methodological paradigms for investigating cognitive biases in the addictions is discussed. Anomalies in traditional cognitive perspectives, and problems with the self-report methods which underpin them, are highlighted. An emergent body of cognitive research, contextualized within the principles and paradigms of cognitive neuropsychology rather than socia...

On the use of radar reflectivity for estimation of the areal reduction factor

In order to estimate the rainfall fields over an entire basin raingauge, pointwise measurements need to be interpolated and the small-scale variability of rainfall fields can lead to biases in the rain rate estimation over an entire basin, above all for small or medium size mountainous and urban catchments. For these reasons, several raingauges should be installed in different places in order t...

Automatic and controlled response inhibition: associative learning in the go/no-go and stop-signal paradigms.

In 5 experiments, the authors examined the development of automatic response inhibition in the go/no-go paradigm and a modified version of the stop-signal paradigm. They hypothesized that automatic response inhibition may develop over practice when stimuli are consistently associated with stopping. All 5 experiments consisted of a training phase and a test phase in which the stimulus mapping wa...

Preaspiration in the Nordic Languages Synchronic and diachronic aspects

Preaspiration — the production of glottal friction at the juncture of a vowel and a consonant — appears to be typologically rare but is an areal linguistic feature of Northwestern Europe. This study contains a survey of the known geographical spread of preaspirated stops, their phonological distribution and phonetic expressions in some Nordic dialects. The study also suggests a reconstruction o...
